Domestic Violence at Work Online Resource

As part of the continued commitment of the Canadian Labour Congress to keep people safe at work, the CLC has recently launched a new online resource. This website provides important information to union representatives about domestic violence as it impacts the workplace.

According to the CLC December 6th statement, “Our new resource centre will include tools and strategies for union leaders, representatives and members to help build awareness, break the silence, and improve workplace safety for everyone.” The information can be found at www.domesticviolenceatwork.ca.

A new poster/brochure has been developed and will be distributed at January Provincial Council. Domestic violence is a union concern and this website will assist local leaders in building awareness, supporting members and holding employers accountable for their obligations under the Occupational Health & Safety Act.

OSSTF/FEESO encourages local leaders to visit the website and learn more about how to support members who are experiencing domestic violence.

Mediation Services Resource Bank

OSSTF's Mediation Services Resource Bank (MSRB) has a mandate to provide mediation services to members requesting assistance in the resolution of disputes with other members. OSSTF will assign a tranined mediator (an OSSTF member) from outside the region to work with the members to help them resolve their conflict. The mediator does not "rule" on the issue. He/she helps the parties to come to their own resolution. All information is kept confidential and no records are kept. The mediator will complete a report which will only state whether or not the mediation was successful. Once mediation has been requested a mediator is assigned and that mediator will contac the members to arrange for a time to come to the area to meet with them.

MSRB services are appropriate in the following circumstances:

  • The conflict is specific;

Both parties:

  • See the mediator as neutral;
  • Agree voluntarily to the process;
  • Have an investment in resolution;
  • Desire a solution;
  • Commit to the time to work towards solving the conflict.

For more information click on MRSB.
